Vast Oceans, Endless Skies

Mixed media installation featuring a custom-made architecture of LaserDiscs, LED lights, steel and aluminium.
Commissioned by the Chinese Canadian Museum for the exhibition Dream Factory, Vancouver 2025

Titled after the song by iconic Hong Kong rock group Beyond, Vast Oceans, Endless Skies reimagines the universe of Cantopop as a speculative cosmos where memory, performance, and future dreams collide. Studded with Cantopop LaserDiscs from the 80s/90s, this installation becomes both spacecraft and shrine, serving as a stage and gathering space for curated programming throughout the 15-month exhibition.
The installation reflects on how Cantopop, carried across the Pacific by waves of Asian migration, became an affective lifeline linking diasporic communities to an imagined homeland and creating spaces of longing, recognition, and belonging across borders, languages, and generations.

96 Cantopop LaserDiscs, collected from Vancouver's local Chinese community, are each fitted with a custom-altered LED bulb that gradually shifts through a colour palette. The disc's data-carrying surface diffracts the bulb's white light into rings of shifting colour.
